Monterey Avenue Extension

Clackamas County, Oregon

The Monterey Avenue Extension project is a new urban roadway that incorporates the construction of a concrete roadway, greenstreet technology, and pedestrian-friendly urban design elements that serve multi-modes of transportation. The project created a vital and attractive east-west connection in the Clackamas County’s growing center.

Prior to construction, access to businesses along SE 82nd Avenue was unsafe and confusing to drivers, leading to unsafe movements in and out of the shopping and services areas. Additionally, there were no nearby vehicle, bicycle, or pedestrian connections from Fuller Road to SE 82nd Avenue, requiring pedestrians to walk as much as three-quarters of a-mile to destinations at SE 82nd Avenue.

The construction of the Monterey Avenue Extension created a link for all modes of travel to SE 82nd Avenue and the Clackamas Town Center. Bicycle and pedestrian connections were provided to the Center, which includes a hub for TriMet’s bus and MAX light rail transit station. Access points to highly-valued corner properties or properties with direct access to public roadways were carefully redeveloped so as to not impact their function or value during or after construction.

HHPR provided full consulting services on this project from conception through final construction. The $7 million project was completed on time and under budget.
