Howard Center for Social Sciences

Lewis & Clark College | Portland, Oregon

The sustainably-designed 50,000-square-foot Howard Center for Social Sciences houses three stories of classrooms, faculty offices and departmental facilities for the Social Sciences Division at Lewis & Clark College. HHPR provided engineering design to meet the Sustainable Sites pre-requisite for erosion and sedimentation control, as well as the stormwater management water quality and quantity LEED points. HHPR incorporated porous paver materials and six water quality “gardens” which accept roof runoff and filter pollutants prior to discharge to the stormwater system. This visual above-ground treatment of the stormwater acts as a public education tool. HHPR provided civil engineering design, plans, and specifications for sanitary sewer facilities, fire and domestic water supply systems, stormwater quality and quantity facilities, and grading/erosion control.
